Why darker skin tones need vitamin D.
As you may already know, our body produces vitamin D from sunshine.
We can also get vitamin D from certain food sources such as oily fish, red meat, liver and egg yolk.
But there is a catch for darker skin people
Melanin (which we absolutely love here!), is responsible for filtering harmful UVB light rays, the flip side is that it also reduces Vitamin D production in the skin.
This is not really a problem when we live in the sunny places we historically originate from where sunshine is plentiful, however, it might become an issue for the afro-descendants living in higher latitudes (e.g. Europe or North America) where sunshine is not as abundant.
Why Vitamin D matters.
In addition to hair loss, according to scientific research, vitamin D deficiency has been linked to :
- Depression
- Heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- Hair loss
- And may even be linked to certain types of cancer.
Whilst it is important to note that not all dark skin people are Vitamin D deficient, a growing body of research points out the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the black population living in higher latitudes.
