Hair Porosity & Hair Care Products
When it comes to Hair Care products, an all size fits all approach is unlikely to give you the results you expect and deserve!
Hair porosity is your hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. It is determined by the structure of your hair cuticle, which is the outside layer of your hair
Knowing your hair porosity is the most important information that will allow you to find the products your hair will benefit from the most.
Let's jump right in!
WHY IS POROSITY IMPORTANT?
In addition to determining your hair's ability to retain moisture, porosity level determines the right protein size that will be able to penetrate the hair shaft to strengthen your hair from the inside.
Smaller proteins are required to penetrate tightly sealed cuticles of low-porosity hair whilst larger proteins are more suitable for widely sealed cuticles.
HOW TO FIND OUT YOUR HAIR POROSITY?
- Pour room-temperature water into a cup
- Place a clean shed hair strand in the glass and let it soak for 3-5 minutes
- After this time, look at what level the hair strand is located in the glass:
Your hair is at the bottom of the glass: your hair is likely to have HIGH POROSITY.
Your hair is in the middle of the glass: your hair is likely to have MEDIUM POROSITY.
Your hair is on top of the glass: your hair is likely to have LOW POROSITY.
HIGH POROSITY
Your hair has a high rate of moisture absorption. the cuticles are far apart. Although it absorbs moisture, it might not retain it effectively. With this hair type, it is advisable to use larger-size protein
MEDIUM POROSITY
Your hair cuticles are not too close together, nor too open. Moisture penetrates easily and can be retained longer.
This porosity level is considered ideal as it can benefit from both large and small-size protein
LOW POROSITY
Your hair has difficulty absorbing moisture because the hair cuticles are tightly sealed. Hair Care products are not easily absorbed which can lead to product waste and build up on your hair.
Because your hair cuticles are tightly sealed, it is important to use small-size protein so that it can penetrate the hair shaft.

Protein Overload
Overusing protein products can cause protein buildup on your hair (known as protein overload). Protein needs to be balanced with moisture. If not, this can actually worsen your hair condition instead of repairing it.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF PROTEIN OVERLOAD?
If you notice your hair starts to look and feel dry, brittle, dull, and stiff, swap some of your products (IF NOT ALL) for protein-free versions until your hair condition improves then slowly re-introduce protein-based products:
EDGES
Dermarolling is a procedure that involves using a roller covered in tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin. It is beneficial for your edges
- It stimulates hair growth by increasing blood circulation and nutrient supply to the hair follicles. The micro-injuries created by the needles trigger the body's natural healing response, promoting the production of growth factors and collagen reducing hair loss and improving hair growth and thickness.
- By creating tiny channels in the scalp, it allows better absorption of topical treatments maximising their effectiveness in promoting hair growth.
SILK / SATIN PILLOWCASES
- Reduced friction: Silk has a smooth and slippery texture, which helps reduce friction between your hair and the pillowcase. This can minimize hair breakage, tangling, and the formation of split ends. Unlike cotton or other materials, silk allows your hair to glide across the surface without snagging or pulling.
- Retention of moisture: Silk is a natural fabric that does not absorb moisture from your hair as much as other materials do, such as cotton. This helps your hair retain its natural oils and moisture, preventing dryness and frizz. The moisture balance in your hair is better maintained, resulting in healthier-looking and more manageable hair.
- Gentle on hair strands: Silk pillowcases are generally smoother and softer compared to other materials. This gentler surface can be beneficial for delicate or easily damaged hair, as it reduces stress on the hair strands. By minimizing friction, silk pillowcases can contribute to maintaining the integrity and strength of your hair.
- Preservation of hairstyles: If you have styled your hair, especially with curls, braids, or other intricate hairstyles, silk pillowcases can help preserve them for longer. The smooth texture of silk reduces the amount of friction and disturbance your hair experiences during sleep, helping your hairstyles stay intact and reducing the need for frequent restyling.
- Hypoallergenic properties: Silk is naturally hypoallergenic and can be beneficial for people with sensitive scalps or allergies. It is less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions compared to synthetic fabrics or certain types of cotton. Silk's smooth texture also reduces the chances of hair products or allergens getting trapped in the fabric and coming into contact with your hair and scalp.
It's important to note that while silk pillowcases can provide these benefits, they may not address underlying hair concerns or replace proper hair care practices. Regular hair care routines, such as using gentle hair products, avoiding excessive heat or chemical treatments, and maintaining a healthy diet, are also essential for overall hair health.
HAIRDRYER
- Faster drying time: The reverse-air technology used by RevAir can significantly reduce drying time compared to traditional hairdryers. The suction feature pulls the hair into the device, allowing it to dry from the roots to the ends quickly. This can be beneficial for those with thick or long hair who often spend a considerable amount of time drying their hair.
- Minimized heat damage: The RevAir hairdryer uses lower heat settings compared to traditional dryers, which can help minimize heat damage to the hair. The controlled heat, combined with the reverse-air technology, gently dries the hair without subjecting it to excessive heat exposure, reducing the risk of dryness, brittleness, and breakage.
- Smoother and shinier results: The reverse-air technology of the RevAir hairdryer helps to align the hair cuticles, resulting in smoother and shinier hair. By drying the hair in a downward direction, it helps to reduce frizz and create a sleeker appearance. The gentle drying process can also help maintain the natural moisture balance of the hair, contributing to a healthier and more lustrous look.
- Versatile styling options: In addition to drying the hair, the RevAir hairdryer can be used for straightening or smoothing the hair. The suction pulls the hair taut against the airflow, which can help straighten curly or wavy hair types without the need for excessive heat or multiple passes with a flat iron. It can be a time-saving option for achieving straight or smooth styles.
- Reduced arm fatigue: The design of the RevAir hairdryer eliminates the need for holding a heavy hairdryer and a brush simultaneously, which can reduce arm fatigue and make the drying process more comfortable. The device does the work of drying and smoothing the hair for you, requiring less effort and allowing you to focus on the overall styling.
It's important to note that individual results may vary depending on your hair type and specific needs. Some users may find the RevAir hairdryer particularly beneficial, while others may prefer different hair drying or styling methods.
