“Some of the health disparities that we see in African-American Adults may be partially due to the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in this population”
Steve Farrell, PhD (Cooper Institute)
Why Darker skin need more vitamin D?
Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to hair loss and to a number of more serious health conditions such as:
- Severe Hair Loss
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Type 2 diabetes
- Bone loss
- Depression
- And even certain types of cancer
Whilst it is important to note that not all darker skin people are lacking Vitamin D, a growing body of research is highlighting the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in ethnicities with darker skin tones hence connecting health, vitamin D deficiency and ethnicity.
Due to the higher presence of melanin, less UVB rays are absorbed in the lower skin epidermis, resulting in less Vitamin D being synthesized.
